Future skills meet cultural foundations in a visionary new direction for UAE education

The United Arab Emirates is once again making headlines with its progressive and balanced approach to education reform. Two new initiatives—recently introduced at the federal and emirate levels—signal a bold step forward in preparing young learners for the realities of tomorrow while deepening their connection to local language and culture.

These landmark changes focus on two key areas:

  1. Making Artificial Intelligence (AI) education mandatory in schools across the country.
  2. Strengthening Arabic language instruction in the earliest years of learning, especially in private and partnership schools.

Together, these initiatives represent a profound shift in the way education is delivered: technologically advanced, culturally rooted, and inclusive of all students.

AI Is Now a Core Part of UAE School Education

In May 2025, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced that AI education would become mandatory across all public schools in the UAE, starting from Kindergarten and continuing through to Grade 12.

This is not about turning every student into a software engineer. Rather, it’s about ensuring that every child, regardless of future profession, understands the role of AI in modern life, develops critical digital thinking, and can navigate an increasingly tech-influenced world.

What Will AI Education Look Like?

The AI curriculum has been carefully designed to suit each age group. It includes:

  • Foundational digital concepts for younger children (what is AI, what are smart devices)
  • Data and algorithm basics for primary students
  • Ethical considerations and real-world case studies for older students
  • Innovation and design thinking activities for teens

Students will not only explore how AI powers everyday tools like Google Maps, voice assistants, and chatbots, but also discuss broader questions:
How does AI affect jobs? What are the risks and benefits? What is our responsibility when using smart technology?

This approach is intended to humanize AI rather than mystify it—helping children see it as a tool, not a threat.

Arabic Language Instruction Gets a Boost in Kindergarten

While embracing digital transformation, the UAE remains deeply committed to preserving the Arabic language and Emirati cultural identity. In 2025, the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) issued a new directive requiring all private and educational partnership schools to offer at least 240 minutes of Arabic instruction per week in Kindergarten.

This means that children as young as four and five will now receive structured, engaging Arabic language lessons as a formal part of their weekly learning schedule—regardless of whether they are native Arabic speakers or not.

Why This Matters

Research shows that early language exposure is key to long-term fluency. By strengthening Arabic instruction during the early childhood years, the UAE is:

  • Building linguistic confidence
  • Enhancing cognitive development
  • Laying the foundation for bilingual or multilingual learning
  • Reinforcing cultural appreciation and social integration

This initiative is also about equity—ensuring that children in private schools, who may not speak Arabic at home, are given the same opportunity to learn and connect with the national language.

A Holistic Educational Vision: Innovation and Identity Together

These two reforms—introducing AI and deepening Arabic learning—are not just about academic subjects. They reflect a comprehensive national vision:

  • AI represents progress, adaptability, and innovation.
  • Arabic represents roots, culture, and continuity.

Rather than seeing these as competing goals, the UAE treats them as complementary priorities. The result is a new model for education—one that prepares children for the global stage while ensuring they stay connected to their heritage.

This is especially relevant in a diverse society like the UAE, where students from dozens of nationalities learn side-by-side in classrooms. Shared values, shared language, and shared knowledge form the glue that holds the future generation together.

How Futurise Institute Can Support These National Priorities

At Futurise Institute, we fully support the UAE’s vision of creating future-ready, culturally grounded learners. Our mission aligns with both of these goals, and we are committed to partnering with schools, parents, and government bodies to ensure these reforms are a success.

Here’s How Futurise Can Help:
1. Supporting AI Integration in Schools
  • AI Literacy Workshops for students aged 6 and up, designed to build understanding in a playful and age-appropriate way.
  • Teacher Training Modules that help educators bring AI topics into the classroom confidently—even if they don’t come from a tech background.
  • Project-Based Learning Units to help students explore AI through storytelling, science, art, and ethics.
2. Enhancing Arabic Language Learning in Early Education
  • Arabic Immersion Programs for KG learners that use music, movement, and sensory play to build fluency.
  • Cultural Storytelling Sessions that bring Emirati values, heritage, and history to life through Arabic.
  • Parent Engagement Workshops to help non-Arabic speaking families support their children’s Arabic learning journey at home.
3. Building Bridges Between Policy and Practice

Futurise serves as a learning partner that helps schools translate policy into action—offering consulting, training, and resource development that meet local standards and global expectations.
